# URL scheme

> Open Vowen pages, notes and transcriptions from links, launchers and scripts with vowen:// URLs.

Vowen registers the `vowen://` URL scheme on macOS and Windows. Opening one of these URLs from a browser, a launcher such as Raycast or Alfred, a Shortcuts action, a note in another app, or a script brings Vowen forward on the page you asked for. If the app is closed, the link launches it first.

```bash theme={null}
# macOS
open "vowen://notes/1729438200000123"
# Windows (PowerShell)
Start-Process "vowen://notes/1729438200000123"
```

## Actions

| URL | Opens |
| - | - |
| `vowen://notes` | The Notes page |
| `vowen://notes/<id>` | One meeting note |
| `vowen://transcriptions` | The Transcribe page |
| `vowen://transcriptions/<id>` | One file transcription |
| `vowen://open/<page>` | A page by name, see the table below |
| `vowen://settings` | The Vowen window |
| `vowen://settings/<section>` | Settings, at one section |
| `vowen://whats-new` | The What's New sheet |

Ids are the numeric ids the CLI prints (`vowen notes list`, `vowen history --type transcription`) and webhooks send as `noteId` and `itemId`. A link to an id that no longer exists opens Vowen without selecting anything.

### Pages for `vowen://open/<page>`

| `<page>` | Page |
| - | - |
| `home` or `history` | Home |
| `notes` | Notes |
| `transcribe` | Transcribe |
| `dictionary` | Dictionary |
| `models` | Models |
| `workflows` | Workflows |
| `tones` | Tones |
| `ai` | AI setup |
| `commands` | Command Mode |
| `apps` | Apps |
| `connectors` | Connectors |
| `permissions` | Permissions |

An unknown page opens Home.

### Sections for `vowen://settings/<section>`

`account`, `general`, `audio`, `language`, `recording`, `hotkeys`, `sync`, `developer`, `experimental`, `permissions`.

## Used by the app itself

Two more actions exist for Vowen's own plumbing. They open nothing.

| URL | Purpose |
| - | - |
| `vowen://cli/wake` | Starts Vowen in the background. The CLI fires it when the app isn't running |
| `vowen://share-inbox` | Asks Vowen to pick up files handed over by the macOS share menu |

## What URLs can't do

Every `vowen://` action only opens something. None of them starts a recording, transcribes or reads a file, or changes your data or settings.

That is deliberate. Any web page can try to open a custom URL, so an action that recorded or read files would be one click away from any site you visit. Use the [CLI](/cli/overview) for those: it only talks to the app through a token that only your user account can read.

| To | Run |
| - | - |
| Start or stop dictation | `vowen record start`, `vowen record stop` |
| Start or stop a meeting note | `vowen notes start --template "<name>"`, `vowen notes stop` |
| Transcribe a file | `vowen transcribe <file>` |
| Import a recording as a note | `vowen notes import <file>` |

A launcher or Shortcuts action that can run a shell command can call any of these.

## Linking from a webhook

Webhook payloads carry the note or transcription id, so a receiver can post a link that opens the item on the machine that recorded it:

```js theme={null}
const link = payload.type === 'transcription'
  ? `vowen://transcriptions/${payload.itemId}`
  : `vowen://notes/${payload.noteId}`;
```

See [Webhooks](/integrations/webhooks) for the payload.
